Dr. Schwartz

Breast Cancer & Reconstructive Surgeon

Jean-Claude Schwartz, MD, PhD

As a national leader in the field of oncoplastic breast surgery (Oncoplastic surgery integrates an aggressive oncological resection with immediate reconstruction using plastic surgery principles to avoid deformities and sometimes even improve the appearance of the breast), dr. Schwartz is exclusively dedicated to breast cancer surgery and reconstruction. He has developed and described numerous surgical techniques in reconstructive surgery that have benefited his patients and others all over the world. He has described one of the most innovative ways to save a woman’s breast, avoiding mastectomy surgery and the prolonged course of reconstructive surgeries often required afterwards. He has innovated the outpatient mastectomy and reconstruction and described the largest series to date in 2020. He performs nearly all his bilateral mastectomy and implant reconstruction surgeries without hospital admission.

There is no breast surgical oncologist in the United States that offers his patients the same variety of oncoplastic options after cancer surgery nor has contributed more to the field of breast reconstruction surgery after both partial and total mastectomy than Dr. Schwartz.

As a cancer survivor, Dr. Schwartz has a special dedication to taking care of patients diagnosed with breast cancer. He understands and sympathizes with his patients who require surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy for treatment. During his MD/PhD studies he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and went through a prolonged course of chemotherapy and radiation but still persevered to complete his studies without delay and even managed to win the Julius Marmar Fellowship, awarded to the graduate student for outstanding PhD studies. In addition to his interest in taking care of cancer patients, Dr. Schwartz has developed a special interest in reconstructive surgery. He takes special pride in restoring a woman’s femininity after cancer surgery by providing her with the most advanced and innovative surgical techniques available anywhere in the world. Many of these approaches were developed and first described by Dr. Schwartz.

Dr. Schwartz grew up in New York and graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with a degree in biochemistry followed by MD and PhD degrees at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  His PhD thesis was published in Nature, the most prestigious scientific journal in the world.
Dr. Schwartz then went on to complete his general surgery training at Emory University followed by a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Yale University. Dr. Schwartz performed several thousand surgeries over 5 years in private practice in head and neck surgery, minimally invasive surgery, breast surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, and abdominal surgery providing him the surgical skill set, expertise, and experience required of a practitioner and leader in oncoplastic breast surgery.

To gain truly worldwide expertise in oncoplasty, Dr. Schwartz spent a year studying advanced oncoplastic techniques in New Zealand, Milan, Brazil, Paris, and London with the international leaders in oncoplastic surgery. He now practices in Lawrenceville, Georgia where he focuses on breast cancer surgery and reconstruction. He is one of just two surgeons in Georgia and a handful in this country who is capable of removing breast cancer followed by performing an immediate reconstruction. Unlike most other surgical teams in the country, he usually only requires one surgery to complete a patient’s cancer surgery and reconstruction.
Dr. Schwartz has published and continues to publish numerous peer-reviewed papers describing new innovative techniques in breast reconstruction in the most prestigious surgical journals. As a leader in his field, he is regularly invited to write book chapters in the area of breast reconstruction and to speak at conferences educating other surgeons in the field of oncoplastic breast surgery. He is one of just two surgeons in Georgia and a handful in this country who is capable of removing breast cancer followed by performing an immediate reconstruction. Unlike most other surgical teams in the country, he usually only requires one surgery to complete a patient’s cancer surgery and reconstruction.

Dr. Schwartz is committed to making sure his patients are both cancer-free and obtain an aesthetic result that restores or even enhances their final breast appearance, usually requiring just one surgery to accomplish both. Dr. Schwartz performs hundreds of breast reconstructions per year, after both partial and total mastectomy, utilizing both implants and or a patient’s own tissues. He has devoted himself to excellence in his career, sacrificing his personal life and time, to care for his patients and provide them with the most advanced techniques available anywhere in breast cancer surgery and reconstruction. He is constantly striving to improve his practice by traveling within the US and abroad to learn the latest techniques and approaches from world experts. He is also constantly innovating new techniques himself which he regularly publishes in leading surgical journals and is invited to lecture about at national conferences.

Dr. Schwartz performs the overwhelming majority of his surgery in a private Ambulatory Surgery Center that is physically attached to his office and only steps away from collaborating radiologists and medical oncologists. He has recently published his outstanding results that have documented a reduced infection rate and decreased operative time in his surgery center versus the hospital setting. His surgical team at the Ambulatory Surgery Center is dedicated to breast cancer surgery and reconstruction making his surgeries more efficient and less prone to complications in comparison to the hospital setting were the staff and operative protocols are not dedicated to breast surgery.
