Zenn Delay Breast Reconstruction

The Zenn Delay Breast Reconstruction is a state-of-the-art surgical procedure designed to restore the natural appearance of the breasts following a mastectomy. This innovative method combines the principles of delayed reconstruction with either the patient’s own tissue (flap) or pre-pectoral (over the muscle) implant placement to optimize aesthetic outcomes and enhance healing. This method is named after Dr. Michael Zenn, an internationally renowned plastic surgeon who pioneered and described the technique for breast cancer patients in 2015 while at Duke University Medical Center (Professor of Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery).

Different Types of Breast Reconstruction Surgery Comprehensive Guide

Who is a Good Candidate?

The Zenn Delay is suitable for any patient after a nipple-sparing mastectomy. At our office, we recommend this delayed reconstruction approach specifically to women in need of additional healing between mastectomy and reconstruction to provide for safe recovery and successful second-stage reconstruction minimizing complications.

The Zenn Delay approach offers several advantages over traditional methods. Some key benefits include:

  • Enhanced Aesthetic Outcomes: The preservation of skin and nipple-areolar complex can result in a more natural-looking breast.
  • Improved Healing: By allowing time for the skin and nipple to simply recover. No additional stress on the area with an implant or an expander.
  • Customized Options: You can choose between implants and your own tissue for reconstruction, tailoring the procedure to your needs.

Consultation and Procedure

During your initial consultation, Dr. Schwartz will evaluate your medical history and examine your breasts. Dr. Schwartz will explain the procedure in detail, including the risks and benefits, and he will discuss your expectations and goals. It is essential to openly communicate your concerns, desires, and any previous breast cancer treatments you have undergone. This will help Dr. Schwartz tailor the procedure to your specific needs. The consultation is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and address any doubts or fears you may have.

The Zenn Delay unfolds in two stages. The first stage starts with a nipple-sparing mastectomy, during which Dr. Schwartz places surgical drains at the site where breast tissue was removed to prevent fluid accumulation. This step allows the skin and nipple to heal without additional pressure from an implant or expander, ensuring a more comfortable recovery.

It is important to understand that reconstruction is not performed at the time of mastectomy. During the two weeks between the mastectomy and reconstruction, your chest is flat.

Drains are removed about a week after mastectomy and preparations are made for the second stage, the reconstruction.

The second and final stage is reconstruction. Dr. Schwartz proceeds using either implants or autologous tissue (tissue from your own body), depending on your individual preference and medical recommendations.

Recovery and Results

Recovery times can vary based on your individual health factors and the complexity of the procedure. Generally, patients can expect:

  • A recovery period of 4 to 6 weeks, during which physical activities should be minimized.
  • A follow-up appointment to monitor the healing process and address any concerns.
  • Potential discomfort or swelling, which can typically be managed with prescribed medications.
  • As the weeks progress, the results of Zenn Delay Breast Reconstruction begin to reveal themselves but it’s important to remember that healing takes time.
