I saw Dr. Schwartz 11/22 for a “minor” reconstruction, after he advised me about the procedure and how it should help. The office personnel, the nurses, Dr. Schwartz, and everyone in the surgery unit, made me feel well taken care of. Surgery is NEVER fun and always uncomfortable, but I was treated with kindness and care and it was much appreciated. Of course, I recommend this group! Debbie

After spending my entire adolescent and adult life with very dense, large breasts, I finally gave in to the neck, back and shoulder pain that I had endured for years. I vetted the doctors in our area and Dr. Schwartz was the surgeon I selected. He is very kind, personable and understands all the things I had concerns about. He has changed my life and I am so grateful to him for that! His medical team is excellent and I would highly recommend them to anyone who finds themself needing an exceptional breast surgeon.

Dr. Schwartz is VERY knowledgeable and very enthused about his specialty. Dr. Schwartz listened and answered all of our questions. I trusted him with every aspect of the process. He was aware of what all treatments I would likely receive during my initial visit. Dr. Schwartz shared his prior work and publication with us to aid in our comfort and trust. I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. I’m beyond pleased with the results. It’s also great to share a laugh or two with your doctor during this challenging journey. His staff was great as well. They answered and return calls promptly and always were friendly. 10/10 would definitely recommend. Thank you Dr. Schwartz!!!

After going to a previous surgeon for a consultation for a breast reduction and leaving disappointed, I found Dr. Schwartz and even in just a consultation he made me feel so confident about getting the surgery. He listened to all my concerns and addressed them leaving me so excited for my surgery. His insight on everything puts you in a calm state and gives you a sense of trust, which is so important since you are being cut into. Either way I’m excited and more than ready for the relief and a better quality of life. Dr. Schwartz made me feel comfortable and I’m glad I chose him as my surgeon!!

As the Top Breast Surgeon In Atlanta, Dr. Schwartz is an expert in both breast cancer surgery and reconstruction. Dr. Schwartz can offer his patients a comprehensive list of surgical options and a detailed explanation of the surgery that best suits them. The details of both the cancer surgery and reconstruction are fully explained to patients, including their expected results, recovery time, and how their surgeries will be scheduled around their possible need for chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy surgery can be performed with either your own tissues or an implant.  The best option for you is a personal decision but is influenced by your breast size, body size, need for radiation therapy, and your personal goals with regard to how you want your new breasts to look and feel.

Breast conservation or lumpectomy has equivalent or better cure rates than mastectomy with fewer risks of surgical complications.  Patient satisfaction is typically better after breast conservation and especially after oncoplastic* surgery.  Dr. Schwartz is a recognized national expert in oncoplastic breast conservation.

*Oncoplastic breast surgery combines the techniques of traditional breast cancer surgery with the cosmetic advantages of plastic surgery. The goal is to remove cancer while minimizing the unwanted effects of surgery, helping patients heal both physically and emotionally.

Dr. Schwartz performs nearly 100% of his reconstructions at the same time as the mastectomy or lumpectomy surgery.

In October of 1998, Congress passed the “Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act,” which requires group health and individual health insurance coverage for reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy. In general, the law states that these plans should cover:

  • Reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was performed
  • Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce a symmetrical appearance
  • prosthesis (artificial breast) and treatment of physical complications at all stages of the mastectomy

Dr. Schwartz has performed several thousand breast reconstruction procedures. He specializes only in breast surgeries and is one of only a few oncoplastic surgeons in the US.

As 80% of women choose an implant-based reconstruction after mastectomy, this is the most common type of reconstruction Dr. Schwartz performs. Having said that, Dr. Schwartz has significant experience and has published several techniques on autologous reconstruction or using your own tissues to reconstruct your breast.

Dr. Schwartz makes every effort to match your newly reconstructed breast with your other healthy breast and has published several approaches describing strategies to accomplish this.

During your consultation, Dr. Schwartz will recommend surgery on your other breast if he thinks this is important to make the breasts look alike.  This might involve a breast reduction, lift, or breast augmentation.

Nipples are often reconstructed in a second surgery after the mastectomy surgery.  Dr. Schwartz makes every effort to reconstruct your nipple at the same time as your mastectomy, to avoid this additional surgery.  Nipples are typically reconstructed from excess breast skin.

Dr. Schwartz exclusively uses round, smooth silicone breast implants.  These are the safest and best breast implants for reconstruction.

Tissue flaps require scars in other parts of the body that “donate” this tissue to the breast after mastectomy.  These scars are typically hidden in creases that are difficult to see.  Pain after flap surgery typically resolves in 1-2 weeks.  These sites do not appreciably change after surgery retaining most of their original shape and form.

Tissue flap surgery usually does not require using an implant as well unless you don’t have enough excess fatty tissue to reconstruct a breast.

Dr. Schwartz performs all of his mastectomy and implant-based reconstructions without hospital admission.  For patients that undergo mastectomy and flap surgery on one side, hospital admission is not required either.  Patients that undergo mastectomy and flap reconstruction on both sides are typically recommended to spend one night in the hospital.

The use of high-volume fat transfer is a new, minimally invasive breast reconstruction approach that can provide many women a naturally-appearing breast using their own fat without significant scarring in other parts of the body.

Breast reconstruction does not interfere with the delivery of chemotherapy unless there are healing problems or an infection.

Breast reconstruction almost always can be performed without affecting the delivery of radiotherapy.  However, radiotherapy typically has a negative impact on the breast reconstruction result which may require additional surgeries to correct.

Dr Jean Claude Schwartz is an outstanding surgeon. Breast cancer is a scary and very frightening diagnosis. As I was diagnosed with Stage Breast 3A Breast Cancer, I was referred to Dr Schwartz. He explained the entire surgical process of my lumpectomy and then my reconstruction via his flap procedure. Dr Schwartz truly cares about each and every one of his patients, as does his entire staff. He puts his patients ‘at ease’ by taking time explaining all the options and procedures that are best suited for each individual patient. If a person is diagnosed with breast cancer and surgery is needed, I highly recommend Dr Schwartz. He is truly THE BEST ! His office staff is very kind and friendly, as well as being quite helpful. Dr Schwartz and staff are definitely the BEST ‘A TEAM’ in this field of surgery.

As an RN, I had researched Dr. Schwartz as well as other surgeons and oncology programs around Metro Atlanta while awaiting the biopsy results. I saw Dr. Schwartz within hours of receiving those results and was immediately at peace with him as my surgeon. He was caring and extremely informative concerning surgical options recommended for the size and location of my positive tumors; as well as answering all my other questions. Dr. Schwartz continued to be informative and share resources for me to educate myself further through this whole journey. I elected a bilateral mastectomy with plan for reconstruction using my own tissue understanding this would not be a singular surgery. Following chemotherapy, I had a Goldilocks procedure to ensure optimal skin preservation through radiation. Post radiation, I had a bilateral muscle sparing latissimus flap graph reconstructive procedure. Not only is Dr. Schwartz a talented surgeon, he is compassionate, caring and humorous all characteristics I appreciate.
